Perplexity Pages, Copyright Victories, and AI's Role in Coding at AWS

August 25 2024 | Issue #59

In this issue:

  • Make topic-based web pages with Perplexity
  • A good AI detector?
  • AWS tells coders that AI will eventually do their coding
  • Copyright case against AI goes for artists
  • Classic, clever print ads
  • Design quote of the week

Sorry for the lack of communication lately. Some nonsense unexpectedly sidelined me, but it's all good now. Long story short: check your settings when switching vendors. Then you won't find yourself deep in the woods of Maine on your phone trying to figure out how to unschedule two already scheduled newsletters.

Anyway ...

Have you heard of Perplexity Pages? It's a new way to show you're an expert on a topic without doing any work!

I'm being a bit cute with that description, but Perplexity now lets you create pages based on information you generate with the system. After you ask Perplexity a question or ten, you can then convert that information into a web page for others to review.

I ran an experiment on the topic of visual marketing to see what it would create. The information is accurate and it could go into more depth if I wanted to take it there.

The image generation part is not good. But it can pull (and properly source) content from other websites to help add images to your new page.

It's only available to Perplexity Pro accounts, but I know some folks, like Brian Piper, are using it to amplify further the Snippet-ready content that has already been created.

Knowing Brian, I bet he's putting a lot of work into it. I fear someone could create a page on a topic by clicking a few buttons and flooding the Internet with more low-effort, AI-generated, poorly conceived content.

Thanks to Dave Boerger and Ashley Gross for introducing me to this new feature.

🤓 Artists Score Major Win in Copyright Case Against AI Art Generators

The Hollywood Reporter covers a landmark legal victory for artists in their fight against AI art generators, as a U.S. court rules that AI-generated works cannot be copyrighted, ensuring that human artists retain exclusive rights to their original creations.

  • Legal Precedent: The ruling sets a crucial precedent that AI-generated art lacks the necessary human authorship to qualify for copyright protection, reinforcing the legal framework that protects human creators.
  • Artist Protections: This decision bolsters the rights of artists in the face of increasing AI-generated content, ensuring that their creative work cannot be replicated and monetized without their permission.
